Playing it

You get a note from your guitar by making the strings vibrate and change the pitch of that note by limiting how much of the string vibrates. Frets on a guitar provide convenient points along the length of the string to do that but if you don't have frets and are using a slide you have to be more careful. You have more freedom to play an infinite amount of different pitches but you need to be able to play accurately and in tune by placing the slide exactly in the right place (where the frets would normally be). Never make excuses for having a slide on your finger!!!

I like to tell my students that what note they pick is less important than where they choose to put it (as long as you're in tune). Phrasing, the rhythmic placement of your notes, is the most important skill a musician can have and in most cases the attribute of your playing that will distinguish you from everyone else. While most people tend to focus on their left hand (for right handed players) it is the right hand that is most important and especially so for cigar box guitar players.

The Starter Pack will systematically take you through a number of exercises to build fluency in your right hand and develop skills to play a variety of patterns using straight, swing and shuffle feels. You'll learn about accenting, syncopation, playing the backbeat, the independent thumb, you'll approach your guitar as if it is a rhythm instrument and your right hand is a drum kit. Once you can play in time and in a number of different feels you'll be sounding like a musician from lesson 1

Once you've got that down you'll learn the techniques you need to play cleanly and accurately with your left hand. You'll develop skills such as muting and you'll learn to co-ordinate your right and left hands and hit your notes spot on, I like to refer to your left hand as a dart, hitting the bullseye every time.

Along the way there are tunes to learn and riffs to add to your arsenal when you just feel like makin' stuff up. The cigar box guitar is fun and learning it needs to be fun to.
